Modern computer chips are made in extremely clean factories, because a single speck of dust is bigger than the tiny parts on a chip.

The whole building is kept under pressure.
The whole building is kept under pressure.

If you walk into a normal room, you see many dust particles in the air. These tiny bits of dirt float around and land on surfaces all the time, so they are always there.

A modern chip is made from parts that are smaller than a grain of sand. The smallest pieces on a chip are only about two microns wide, which is smaller than the size of one single dust speck.

Because the parts are so small, even a tiny bit of dirt can block an electrical path or break a wire. This means the chip will not work properly when it is finished, and you cannot use your phone or laptop.

Factory workers wear special suits and masks to keep the air completely clean inside the building. They also use machines that suck up any dust before it touches the glass floor or the metal tools, so nothing gets in.

The whole building is kept under pressure so that outside air cannot get in through small cracks or doors. This makes the inside of the factory much cleaner than the room you are in right now, and it is very expensive to build.

If a chip maker does not follow these rules, they cannot make computers that work well for us. We would have to throw away millions of devices because they are broken by invisible dust, and that is a big problem for everyone.
