Why Koalas Sleep So Much
A koala can spend almost half of its entire day just resting.
Koalas sleep about eighteen to twenty-two hours every single day. This is much more than most other animals need to rest. They spend so much time sleeping because their food gives them very little energy. Their diet is made of eucalyptus leaves, and these leaves are not easy to eat or digest. A human being can get enough energy from eating bread, but a koala cannot do the same with leaves. The eucalyptus tree produces special chemicals that make its leaves poisonous to almost everything else. Only the koala has a very strong stomach which can break down these chemicals slowly. Because it takes so much energy to digest the leaves, their bodies do not have enough power for other activities like running or jumping.
If a koala tried to run fast after eating, it would feel very sick and weak. It is better for them to stay still and rest instead of trying to move around too much. They sit on a branch all day, holding onto it with their strong claws and soft paws. This way they save energy for the few times they need to stand up or stretch.
The koala also has a very slow heartbeat, which helps them save power inside their body. Their heart beats only about forty times per minute, while a human heart beats over sixty thousand times in the same day. A slow heartbeat means less energy is used by their whole body, so they can survive on such a poor diet.
It makes us think about our own lives and how much energy we waste on things that do not matter. We scroll through phones or watch silly videos for hours when we should be resting more instead of just sleeping.
