People bought a special version of the Apple II computer just to use it. This computer was not very powerful by today's standards, but it had enough memory for the program to run. The screen was black with green letters, and users could not click on boxes with a mouse. They had to type the numbers directly into the cells using only their keyboard. This made entering data feel a bit like typing on a typewriter, which was not very comfortable for many people.

The program automatically calculated totals when you changed a single number in the table. This was amazing because it saved everyone hours of time doing math by hand with a pencil and paper. Before VisiCalc, accountants had to re-calculate everything if one number changed in a report. Now they could just update one cell and watch the numbers change everywhere else automatically.

It is funny to think that a business could not do without this software in the early 1980s. Many companies had to decide between buying a new computer or losing their ability to manage money properly. VisiCalc proved that simple tools could make complex tasks easy for normal people, not just experts with expensive machines.
