Canada Has More Lakes Than Any Other Country

Most people think the US has the most lakes, but Canada is actually the real winner.

Canada holds a surprising record for natural water features on Earth. The country has more lakes than any other nation in the world. You might guess that Russia or China would win this title, but Canada beats them both easily.

The reason behind this fact is the way ice shaped the land during the Ice Age. Thousands of years ago, huge glaciers covered most of Canada and pushed down into the ground. When these massive blocks of ice melted, they left behind huge holes in the earth. These holes filled with water and became lakes today.

You can see this process all over the country, especially in the north and west. For example, Lake Superior is very famous because it is the largest freshwater lake in North America. Even if you live far away from Canada, its water flows into the Great Lakes near your home. Every time a glacier moves and melts, it creates new spots for water to sit.

This means that many Canadians live near a lake almost every day of their lives. You might drive to work and pass by three different lakes before you get home. It also means that Canada has a lot of jobs connected to fishing and boating because the water is so plentiful.

So, while other countries have big rivers or wide oceans, Canada wins by having the most lakes of all.
