The Message from Ten Years Ago
An old friend writes today, and a small gift makes him remember everything.
The phone buzzed on the kitchen table while I was making coffee. It was a message from Mark, who had sent nothing for ten years.
I stopped moving and stared at the screen with my free hand. The words said, "I was thinking about you yesterday and wanted to say hello."
I felt a strange feeling in my chest because it was not like our old conversations. We used to argue about sports and forget to call each other for months, but this message was very different. It felt like he wanted to share something special without asking for anything in return.
I typed a reply and sent it back before I could change my mind. Then, an email appeared on the screen right after my message was sent. It was from Mark's wife, who wrote that her husband had forgotten his keys and needed help getting home.
I decided to go out into the cold rain to help him get inside his own house. When I opened the door for him, he looked at me with real surprise and a small smile on his face.
We stood there in the doorway for a moment, laughing at how silly it all was. I told him that ten years of silence had turned into a helpful moment for the both of us, and he agreed with my words.
